HONORS THEATRE ENSEMBLE

Instructor: Ms. Zaleski

PREREQUISITE: At least two previous theatre courses, participation in NHS productions, permission of instructor

Ensemble is designed for the highly motivated theatre student and moves at an accelerated pace. Students are given assignments in all areas of theatre (acting, directing, technical theatre, writing), as it is critical that they understand and appreciate how the elements must work together. Students are encouraged to think creatively and collaboratively. The ultimate focus is on specific skill-building and truly working as an ensemble. The course requires a significant time commitment outside of class. Students in this class will produce a full-length production, as well as each directing a short piece for performance. Students will explore career options and preparation for college programs, including audition skills and portfolio development. Students in this class will keep a journal to examine their own lives and relationships, to explore personal topics, and to reflect on their classroom experience.

As an honors course, it is expected that students demonstrate critical thinking and take a leadership role in the theatre activities of NHS. More extensive reading and writing is required than in other theatre courses. Students read at least one play per month, research current events in professional theatre, and study techniques of major acting and directing methods. Observations appropriate to an advanced level of experience are required for a successful grade. Additional topics will be included that vary from year to year depending on the needs of the students.

It is the mission of the Newburyport Public School Performing Arts Department to provide every student the opportunity to engage in the appreciation, creation and analysis of multiple performing arts modalities. We will provide a 21st century education through embedding technology in each performing arts course, while focusing on the connection with the physical body, voice or instrument. Through culturally sensitive instructional practices, students will experience the performing arts as relevant to their multiple intelligences. Whether students pursue the performing arts at a post-secondary or professional level or engage in it socially, we aim to instill a lifelong advocacy for the impact and power of creativity.
