Elements of Acting & Design

Elements of Musical Theatre

The Elements courses are our productions. Students earn credit and receive a grade for participating in a fully staged theatrical production. The number of credits earned is based upon the hours worked, so typically students are eligible for 2.5 credits for a straight play and 5 credits for a musical. Both actors and technical students must audition or apply for each production. We encourage our students to engage in both on stage and backstage experiences. Students are responsible for ensuring they work enough hours and must turn in a final reflection at the conclusion of the production. Strike is mandatory for both actors and technicians.

Depending on the show, we may also participate in workshops to develop certain skills or help our students deepen their understanding of a particular topic. While these experiences are typically not a required portion of the class, we find them extremely valuable. Watch a clip of a student during a stage combat workshop.

It is the mission of the Newburyport Public School Performing Arts Department to provide every student the opportunity to engage in the appreciation, creation and analysis of multiple performing arts modalities. We will provide a 21st century education through embedding technology in each performing arts course, while focusing on the connection with the physical body, voice or instrument. Through culturally sensitive instructional practices, students will experience the performing arts as relevant to their multiple intelligences. Whether students pursue the performing arts at a post-secondary or professional level or engage in it socially, we aim to instill a lifelong advocacy for the impact and power of creativity.
